Often within the world of luxury fashion, we consistently hear about the likes of Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, etc. However, the reality is that the wealth of black talent in luxury is incredible yet, many designers do not get the spotlight they deserve. With Black History Month only two weeks away, we want to take a moment to highlight the designers behind our favourite black-owned luxury brands.

Christopher John Rogers

Christopher John Rogers is increasingly becoming a go-to designer for influential women worldwide - dressing the likes of Cardi B, Michelle Obama, Rihanna, Tracie Ellis Ross, Lady Gaga, and many more. Rightfully named the king of colour, Christopher has a way of mixing vibrant and lively colours with elegant silhouettes. Have a look at some of our favourite items from his most recent collection.

Phlemuns

The incredible designer behind Phelemuns, James Flemons, has been seen on the likes of Rico Nasty, Lil Nas X, Kelsey Lu, and many more. He is essentially dressing the future of fashion - creating a community of longevity rather than just making clothes. Founded in 2013, Phlemuns has been able to release thirteen collections, starting with a gender-bending sustainable capsule collection that was instantly praised by the industry.

LaQuan Smith

Being the first fashion designer to showcase inside of the empire state building, LaQuan Smith has been making waves within the industry from the young age of 21. In an interview with Forbes, he revealed that his muse has always stemmed from his love of femininity and the female form, wanting to celebrate the powerful nature women’s curves. Having been taught the intricacies of sewing and pattern making by his grandmother, LaQuan no creates unapologetically sexy and luxurious garments that have been worn by Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanah, and many more.

Telfar

Liberian-American designer, Telfar Clemens, began his career in fashion through reconstructing vintage clothing to be sold in vintage boutiques on the Lower East Side and in Soho in New York City. Launched in 2005, Telfar has made waves in the industry - creating a worldwide cult following while simultaneously shattering the traditional expectations of cult ‘it’ bags with his affordable and accessible price tags. Worn by literally everyone - despite their affordability these bags are almost impossible to get your hands on and can easily resell for almost triple the original price.

Brandon Blackwood

Brandon Blackwood, launched in 2015 with only four bags named after his friends and family, harnessed the power of social media to build a name for himself and his brand. His iconic “end systematic racism” tote bag quickly caught the eye of consumers wanting to support brands that authentically value gender, financial, and racial equality in the midst of the Black Lives Matter movement. Now he has become a cult label - joining the likes of Telfar and creating campaigns with celebrities such as Halle Berry, Doja Cat, and joan Collins.
