Highlights: Milan Fashion Week F/W 2024
Written by Amiya B
Historically, often the most iconic fashion moments have happened over the course of Milan Fashion Week. Fabulous fashion set against the scenic backdrop of one of the most stylish cities in the world - what else would one expect? History has in fact repeated itself and somehow made waves in the future fashion scene all at once with this year’s fall/winter Milan Fashion Week. Legendary labels have put on shows that will play on in our minds for weeks so read on to admire our favourite collections from MFW 2024.
1. Diesel
Over the last year, Diesel has returned to the centre stage of pop fashion in a big way. It has become the ‘it girl’ fashion brand and if this collection is proof of what’s to come, then it’s sure to be upward and onward for them. This year’s fall/winter collection consisted of flouncy fur silhouettes and the brand’s iconic use of denim in colour and material. The show itself included a video call with a thousand people from around the world - uncommon and unbelievably cool.
2. Fendi
Taking inspiration from British style influences from the 1980s, Kim Jones designed this collection with the concept of British elegance and its global subcultures in mind. Only Fendi can find the glamour in utility and put on a show that is impossible to look away from. According to us, the Roman influences are the most obvious and the most divine of them all.
3. Del Core
Sleek and stylish, Del Core has to be among our top shows from Milan Fashion Week 2024. This season, the atelier experimented with varying textures and bold structures, while keeping to their minimalistic clean blueprint. Del Core described its vision best, defining the experience as an attempt at ‘capturing the liquidity of mutation in tailoring’. This is one collection that will fly off the racks once off the catwalk.
4. Roberto Cavalli
Roberto Cavalli’s collection for Milan Fashion Week titled ‘Marbleous’ was (dare I say) marvellous from start to finish. Influenced by the malleability of marble, over centuries taking different forms in nature, Cavalli created this collection as ‘a charming ode to metamorphosis’. Be it the marbled drapings, sheer silhouettes or flouncy skirts - Cavalli’s catwalk was a treat for the masses.
5. Prada
Prada has always been famously distinguishable from the brand’s luxury designer counterparts. This year’s fall/winter collection was stunning - no surprise there. Prada has always had a coquettish essence to it and this year, the label chose to put that essence on display. On trend and utterly fabulous, the coquette aesthetic was proudly on display and if Prada says it’s a valid trend, then who are we to argue?
6. Sportmax
80s British fashion must have been quite the trendsetter for Sportmax is yet another label that took creative influences from the aforementioned era. Titles ‘Camera Obscura’, Sportmax displayed elongated silhouettes and sculptural designs in shades of grey, black and red to depict their futuristic vision of rigorous sensuality. If the renaissance of 80s fashion even faintly resembles the likes of Sportmax’s fall/winter collection, then you can gladly sign us up.
7. Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini
Philoshopy di Lorenzo Serafini showcased a vivid ensemble of apparel in bright pops of colour. The label described this year’s fall/winter collection as ‘the wardrobe of an intelligent, empowered and elegant woman, who navigates life with the right dose of confidence’. Our favourite theme from the show has to be the shiny satin looks in beautiful shades of pink, green and yellow.
8. Gucci
Word on the streets is that Gucci is bringing their A-game this year and if the label’s fall/winter collection is proof of what is to come, then there’s no argument there. Gucci painted a gorgeous picture this season with their striking pastels and rich browns elegantly carpeting the runway. Note our personal showstoppers - the yellow short-suit and the slinky sequinned fringe dress.
9. Ferragamo
When you think Ferragamo, you think class and femininity. Yet again, the famed atelier delivered a fashionably phenomenal collection at this year’s MFW. Creative director Maximilian Davis commented on the collection’s thematic exploration into the concept of clothes and freedom: “The 1920s used clothing as a way to celebrate freedom. And that expression of freedom is something which resonates with me, with my heritage, and with Ferragamo.”
10. Dolce & Gabbana
Dolce & Gabbana was dark, brooding and oozing sex appeal at this year’s Milan Fashion Week. The entire collection was giving modern feminine diva, from the netted facial veils to D&G’s transformation of the quintessentially male tuxedo. The atelier transformed the tux into a feminist fashion statement, style bar none. Look out for the myriad of textures that came to play dress up, including chiffon, lace, velvet and organza.
11. Jil Sander
We have droned on about our love for the intersection in fashion where luxury style meets cosy comfort. Well, apparently we are not alone in our adoration as Jil Sander put forth an entire showcase dedicated to the concept of soft luxury fashion that is both chic and comfortable. A pleasant surprise in comparison to the other monochromatic collections that have graced MFW, Sander played with the warmer colours in design.
12. Bottega Veneta
Bottega Veneta has a reputation for delivering styles unmatched in its professional chicness. Going off the concept of flourishing in the face of adversity, the label created an exhibition that transported the audience to Calabria in the south of Italy ‘to barren landscapes where the earth is charred and dry, yet new flowers bloom’. Matthieu Blazy’s creative genius resulted in a collection of clothes that are beautifully crafted, stylishly designed and likely to be on every fashion fanatic’s wishlist.
